SVARTLING - amplifies the web

Google says that they will not continue developing Wave as a standalone product

Update on Google Wave:

- Lets hope this means that Google takes the best features from Wave and use it in something else, because Google Wave really have some really cool features.

We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily “liberate” their content from Wave.

Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. We are excited about what they will develop next as we continue to create innovations with the potential to advance technology and the wider web.Read more at googleblog.blogspot.com

  1. Svartling  @ErinGarrity Too bad. –> Google says that they will not continue developing Wave as a standalone product http://bit.ly/bcmv16 Yes it is… Thanks for RT.

    1. Janet Laane Effron  Wow, that’s disappointing news. I’ve found Wave to be a very useful tool, especially for working with geographically dispersed colleagues. As you observe, it would be nice if Google could find some ways to make use of some of Wave’s functions.

      1. Svartling  Yes I have been using Google Wave for live blogging. It has worked really great for that. I really hope they take this knowledge and put it somewhere else.

      2. Svartling  Re: http://bit.ly/bcmv16 @bolstad A tad sad: Google says that they will not continue developing Wave as a standalone product - Yes me too.

        1. Laurence Borel  I bet the same thing happens to Buzz :p

          1. Svartling  Yes it could, but the user base is much larger there. It’s built into Gmail you know ;)

          2. Russ Jackson  Too difficult for mainstream users to use and understand.

            1. Svartling  Yes that’s probably the reason for a too small user base. But I hope they learn something from it that they can use somewhere else.

              1. Janet Laane Effron  Interesting thought. One of the main places I used wave was with during remote meetings with (non-technology) professionals; people caught on quickly and started to use a large number of features (from basics like file sharing to some of the cool gadgets like embedded mind maps).

But there was an initial fear factor before we started; just very quickly disappeared after a quick instructional session and then actually using it. So maybe it was simply too intimidating on the front end for people to just jump in spontaneously?

              2. steveplunkett  Re: http://bit.ly/bcmv16 @svartling It wasn’t time for Wave… Buzz should have came before Wave, Places should have come before Wave, etc.

                1. Svartling  Yes. That is another reason. I think Google will implement some of it’s features in to some other cool service though. Sooner or later.

                2. Laurence Borel  Yup built into gmail but I disabled mine after a couple of weeks - seeing all these unread buzzes was stressing me out! Like an oversized inbox that never seems to go down!

                  1. Svartling  I have over 1100 followers on Buzz so you can imagine how many unread Buzz I always have :)

                  2. Lori Olson  It was too cryptic.

                    1. Svartling  Yes for most users. It was useful for collaboration though.
